Eat, Sleep, Install, Repeat – The Diary of a Jukebox Engineer

I start the week with an 8am meeting in Coventry to discuss calls…

Monday:

I start the week with an 8am meeting in Coventry to discuss calls that have come in over the weekend and jobs planned for the week ahead. We had a jukebox touchscreen go down in Manchester on the Saturday morning that was resolved by midday with a replacement part and another job in London that I was able to deal with remotely from my smart phone without even visiting the site.

There are many jobs that I can sort out online using our OpWeb system and this means that the jukeboxes are up and running again as quickly as possible.

Following my meeting I go to a working men’s club in Leicester to replace a CD jukebox with a new digital model. The site has great potential and we added two extra music zones to allow the club to control the sound in different areas. The members are thrilled and are already exploring the many features as we leave.

Tuesday:

It’s a 7am start today. A quick cup of tea, load the van, tick the check list and off I go to the Eldon Arms in Reading. New owners Adam and Hailey are keen to bring new life into the already established venue with a digital jukebox.

They did their homework and found out about Hire Jukebox online. Hailey said “We liked the idea of being able to try out a pub jukebox without any risk. No rent, profit share option suited us perfectly. We didn’t want to have to pay for an installation or be tied to a binding contract, so it’s a win, win for us”.

The couple are thrilled with the sound of the new jukebox and the Wharfedale speakers we have installed. More happy customers!

On the way home an online enquiry form comes through to my email on the phone. The enquiry is a social club in Banbury interested in finding out more about our digital jukebox systems. I call the venue and explain we can pop in today if convenient. They agree, so we divert our route and head to the club. After discussing the various deals and profit share options to put forward to the committee we also do a site survey. It’s a big job but we will be prepared. We head back to the unit and unload. Finish time 7.15pm.

Wednesday:

We meet up at 8am. Today takes us to the Duke of Edinburgh pub in Oxford. Landlord James Edwards had discovered our website via a YouTube video we have on the VenueHub. Being impressed with the 7 million tracks available, James was keen to give his diverse range of customers the choice to choose the music they wanted.

The install was relatively simple and we were also able to provide the site with a reject button behind the bar giving them the option to fade any unwanted songs. As Nigel cleans up any dust or off pieces of wire left after the installation, I explain to James how upload jpeg images to the 32″ touch screen display. As the machine is positioned in a prime location this will be perfect for them to advertise and promote their business. We head back and stop off for some lunch. Finish time 5pm.

install

Thursday:

I start at 7am again on a cold dark December morning. Today we are installing in the Cross Keys in Bristol. We load the jukebox, speakers, tools and cable onto the van and head down the M5. We hit traffic and call the site to inform them and are told not to worry and they will have a bacon sandwich ready when we arrive. Bonus!

The Cross Keys is a traditional pub that prides itself on their great selection of craft beers and real ales. The manager Colin allows us to put the jukebox in the most perfect spot, next to the bar which you see as soon as you walk in. Once up, it looks great.

With Colin and the staff putting up the Christmas tree and decorations we leave the already busy pub with a number Christmas songs to set the mood.

We say our goodbyes and head to Pack Horse in Chippenham. Landlady Michelle is having problems with one of the speakers. After a quick examination we establish a loose wire at the back of the speaker. It’s a simple job and she’s impressed by the service. After a cup of tea we head back to base. It’s been a good day. Exhausting but good. Finish time 6.30pm.

refurbishment of pub

Friday:

Today I am in my hometown Coventry. But this doesn’t mean a late start or early finish – in fact the opposite. This is one of the biggest jobs we have ever done.

The Pilot pub is an impressive 8000 sq. ft grade II listed building. Having been closed for nearly two years the pub has undergone a huge refurbishment. Our job is to provide them with an online digital jukebox in the main bar with the option to be able play music in the other three rooms. I carried out the site survey so I explain the job to my colleagues – it will involve installing a total of 14 Wharfedale speakers to create a balanced sound. Landlady Nicky is delighted with the end result especially as she will no longer have to pay for background music or buy CDs. We are also able to run their SKY TV through our system.

Working around a team of builders, carpet fitters and electricians we are able to complete the job in one day. It’s 6pm and we decide to finish the week with a well deserved pint!
